Introduction 🌊

In a corner of sand at the margin of the reef, among pieces of dead coral and very fine grains, Amblyeleotris wheeleri lives its life in the company of a tireless companion: the alpheid shrimp (Alpheus spp.). It is one of the most appreciated gobies for the elegance of its livery and its always attentive behaviour. The relationship is always the same, perfected over millennia: the shrimp digs and maintains the burrow, the goby keeps watch.
The beauty of this species is that it brings into the tank colour, movement and an authentic piece of reef biology. Seeing it look out with its snout outside the entrance, dart out to catch a prey and go straight back in is a gesture that never loses its charm, even for the expert aquarist.

Synonyms

It has no valid scientific synonyms. The official description goes back to 1974 (Polunin & Lubbock) and since then it has remained stable, but in the past it has been confused with other banded species such as Amblyeleotris randalli or A. steinitzi.

Morphology 🔬

Elongated and slender body, with a section slightly compressed laterally. The ventral fins are fused to form the typical adhesive disc of the gobies, useful for staying anchored on the substrate.

The livery is one of the main reasons why it is so much in demand: a pearly white ground crossed by 5–6 vivid red-orange vertical bands, often outlined by lighter margins. The eyes are large, golden-yellow in colour, clearly evident on the head, with a thin yellow line that runs above the orbital zone.

There are two dorsal fins: the first shorter, with spiny rays, the second longer and softer. Caudal and anal fins translucent, sometimes with slight bluish speckling visible under LED light.

Differences between males and females

Sexual dimorphism is little marked:

  • Males: sometimes slightly larger and more robust, with the second dorsal fin more developed.
  • Females: belly more rounded in the reproductive period and sometimes bands slightly less vivid.

The most reliable difference is observed in the courtship behaviours.

Way of life

Amblyeleotris wheeleri lives almost exclusively close to the burrow, it rarely moves more than 10–15 cm away. It maintains constant physical contact with the shrimp’s antennae, ready to give the alarm with rapid movements of the tail.

In nature and in the aquarium it adopts the same strategy: brief outings to feed, lightning returns in case of danger, periodic reconstruction of the entrance together with the shrimp. It is a peaceful fish, but extremely attached to its own zone.

Territoriality ⚠️

Territorial only towards other symbiotic gobies or fish that try to occupy the same burrow. In sufficiently large tanks it can coexist with several pairs, on condition that each has a well-separated sandy zone.

In nature it lives 4–6 years. In the aquarium, if well maintained, it can reach 7–8 years.

It can reach 9–10 cm of total length. In the aquarium it usually stays around 8–9 cm.

Description

A fish that combines elegance and chromatic liveliness. The red bands on a light ground make it recognisable even from a distance. Its typical attitude is that of the vigilant guardian, always half-exposed outside the burrow.

Currently not evaluated (NE). The population is stable and distributed over a wide range, but the loss of habitat and indiscriminate collection could become local threats.

Habitat – origin and geographical distribution 🌍

Widespread in the Indo-Pacific: southern Red Sea, Maldives, Sri Lanka, the coasts of South-East Asia as far as Micronesia and Polynesia. It lives on sandy bottoms at the margins of the coral reef, from 2 up to 25 metres of depth, often in sand-coral transition zones.

Stable tropical waters between 24 and 28 °C all year round.

  • Shaded zones and moderate flow near the burrow

80 litres for a goby-shrimp pair in a dedicated tank. For mixed reefs, better to start from 100–120 litres.

In the aquarium: mysis, enriched artemia, frozen copepods, marine micro-granules. Feed it 2–3 times a day, distributing the food near the burrow.

Reproductive behaviour

It lays in the burrow, with the male defending the entrance and ventilating the eggs. Hatching in 2–4 days depending on the temperature.

Protection of the fry

The larvae are pelagic and are not protected after hatching. Rearing is difficult in captivity.

Risks of hybridisation

Low, but possible with other species of Amblyeleotris in mixed tanks.

Hardy if well acclimatised and kept in stable parameters. Sensitive to salinity swings and high nitrates.
