The Acanthurus xanthopterus is without doubt one of the most imposing members of its genus. Its morphology is imposing and well-proportioned, with features that make it easy to identify even from a distance.

Keeping in the aquarium

The Acanthurus xanthopterus is one of the most majestic species you can introduce into a marine aquarium, but it is not suited to beginners. Its dimensions, its need for space and its delicacy during transport make it a fish for very large tanks, with an advanced filtration system and extremely stable parameters.

Essential requirements:

  • A mature tank, running for at least 6–8 months
  • Excellent oxygenation
  • Water free of nitrites, ammonia and phosphates
  • Management of the chemistry and controlled lighting
  • A constant and balanced feeding regime

It is an extremely hardy animal in the long term, but it suffers a great deal from the stress of acclimatisation and transport, which is why it should be bought only from reliable retailers.

There are no compromises: to house an Acanthurus xanthopterus giant tanks are needed.
